New Delhi: Public property worth Rs 6,000-7,000 crore has been damaged in Punjab while industry has suffered a loss of Rs 400-500 crore due to violent protests in the last two days across the state, according to the chambers estimates.

The protest followed the killing of a Dera sect leader in Vienna.

Assocham estimated the loss to public property at Rs 6,000-7,000 crore and industrial loss at Rs 500 crore. Based on its feedback from the state units, the Confederation of Indian Industry said the industrial losses could be Rs 400 crore.

Major industrial towns like Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Phagwara were affected due to violent street protests.

Most of the boiler and furnace units in these areas were affected due to bands, suffering a Rs 150-crore loss a day, CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said.

“If it continues for a longer time, which we hope will not be so, could affect investment in the state,” he added.

Assocham Secretary General DS Rawat said the Centre should step in to restore peace in the state.

Exports transactions at the Container Corp of India dry ports at Dhandari Kalan in Ludhinana were completely halted.

The steel retail market at Mandi Gobindgarh also remained shut.

Other industries affected are bicycle and bicycle parts, garments, hand tools, auto parts and sport goods.
