A six-year-old boy, who fell into a 100-foot-deep borewell in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, has died. The incident happened when the boy, identified as Rithik Roshan was playing in a field and he climbed a borewell shaft when some stray dogs started chasing him at Khiala Bulanda village near Bairampur in Hoshiarpur.
He fell into the borewell as its shaft was covered with a jute bag and could not withstand the weight of the boy and gave in. Roshan belonged to a family of migrant labourers.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann shared the tragic news on Twitter and also announced an assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the boy’s family.

Earlier in the day, teams of the district administration, including Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Hans, had rushed to the site to rescue the boy. Medical teams were also deployed, besides a team from the National Disaster Response Force. A camera was also put inside the borewell to monitor the boy’s condition, and high-flow oxygen was provided through pipes.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring had earlier said he prayed for the safe evacuation of the boy. “Praying for the speedy and safe evacuation of 6-year-old Rithik, who fell into a borewell at Hoshiarpur. I am sure the administration is doing its best. Waheguru Mehar Kare,” Warring tweeted.
