Faridkot: A Deputy Superintendent of Police died of a gunshot wound while his gunman was critically injured, allegedly in a freak accident, while trying to control a group of protesting students in Faridkot on Monday.

DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu was shot in the head while trying to defuse tension at Regional Campus of the Punjabi University at Jaitu in Faridkot, police said. The bullet scraped his head and got lodged in the eye of his gunman, Lal Singh.

IGP, Bathinda Range, MS Chhina, said the two were rushed to Faridkot Medical Hospital where the DSP succumbed to his injuries. A probe has been ordered into the shocking incident.

The students were protesting against the arrest of two students two days ago and an alleged incident of misbehavior with a group of students by a cop at the local bus stand in Jaitu a week ago. They were also demanding action against the area’s SHO.

When the DSP reached at the spot to pacify the protesters, some of them questioned the "integrity" of the officer, alleging that he was favouring the other group of students who were not in favour of the protest, police said.

A video from the spot shows DSP Sandhu trying to calm the enraged students. He can be seen pointing his service revolver towards his head. He is said to have lost control and fired the shot. Suddenly, he fell after the gun shot went off.

The DSP, who belonged to Patiala, is survived by his wife and 21-year-old son.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh termed the incident as unfortunate and assured that a thorough probe will be carried out.
