THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The weak northeast monsoon is showing signs of strengthening.A low pressure area has been formed near the Kanyakumari coast.According to the Meteorological Department, Thiruvananthapuram, the low pressure area is likely to develop into a depression by Sunday.The state is likely to get widespread rainfall till Monday. The Met Dept has predicted isolated heavy rainfall from Saturday to Monday, besides winds with a speed of 45 km per hour. The north-east monsoon was weak in the state for the past several weeks.Against a normal rainfall of 435 mm during the previous years, the state so far has received 356 mm rainfall. This shows a deficiency of 16 percent.However, according to IMD, a deviation of 19 to -19 percent is viewed as normal. The southern districts received deficient rainfall this season.Pathanamthitta, which usually gets good rainfall, received the least with only -56 percent. Alappuzha (-52 percent) comes second in the list of district which receive the least rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram comes third with -49 percent.Ernakulam (-40 percent), Kottayam (-36) and Kollam (-32 percent) follow.“North-west monsoon is usually weak during the first half of November.It becomes active in the second half. The pattern remains the same for the past 30 years. The presence of depression will trigger more rainfall,’’ said P S Biju, scientist at IMD. The Met Dept has issued warning to fishermen on the strong winds which are likely to hit the state with a speed occasionally reaching 45-55 km per hour.
