“Raksha Bandhan’s tomorrow? I’m sure some of my friends will be on leave,” says Jacob Mathew, an employee at an IT firm in the city. While the practice of girls tying rakhis for boys, to indicate that she considers him as a brother is not very prevalent in the IT sector, some men do take precautions not be put in the “brother-zone”.
Jacob says that Raksha Bandhan was celebrated during their training period last year, but nothing seems to be happening this year, now that they have been mainstreamed into projects.
“In a way it is good; the eligible girls will not be off-limits after this day,” he quips with a grin, adding that any guy who is interested in a girl who follows the tradition will be taking pains to hide from her.
Girls find it amusing to see the usually flirtatious boys behaving themselves on this particular day. Nisha, who works at a prominent IT firm, says, “These guys keep a low profile, knowing that any unwanted comments could lead to a rakhi being tied on their wrist. Otherwise we don’t bother, unless there is someone who is truly like a brother and we want to make the day special for him.”
