New Delhi: The Ram Setu row escalated further in Tamil Nadu on Sunday when BJP leader H Raja's Karaikudi house and the party office in Chennai were allegedly attacked by DMK workers.
Eyewitnesses said windowpanes and vehicles parked in Raja’s residence were damaged in the attack that took place around midnight on Saturday. The miscreants also damaged BJP flag posts.
Protestors burnt effigies of former BJP MP Ram Vilas Vedanti, who had offered a reward for anyone who beheaded the DMK chief M Karunanidhi.
However, Vedanti now says he was only quoting an example from the Bhagwad Gita. He insists that he had only condemned Karunanidhi's statement.
Meanwhile, Raja said that the BJP will raise the issue in Parliament.
Taking strong exception to the reported ‘fatwa’ by Vedanti, senior DMK leader and state Minister Arcot N Veerasamy on Saturday said he would hold a black flag demonstration in front of BJP offices in the state if Vedanti did not withdraw his remarks.
In an apparent damage control exercise, the BJP on Sunday sought to distance itself from the Vedanti ‘fatwa’ controversy and backed the claim of the VHP leader that he was misquoted.
