BELLARY: Medical Education Minister S A Ramadas who paid a surprise visit to Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) Hospital here on Monday, has instituted a one-man committee to enquire irregularities at the hospital.The minister’s arrival at the hoispital premises at 9:40 am took many by surprise as several doctors and other staff had either not signed the attendance register or were absent.It is said that 41 doctors had abstained from attending duty on time, when the minister was in the hospital. Moreover, the issue of government doctors writing chits for purchasing medicine from outside enraged Ramadas so much, that he immediately announced the setting up of the one-man enquiry committee.Ramadas’ visit assumed importance as VIMS has been in the news for the wrong reasons for malpractice in the medical PG CET. Later, Ramadas told reporters that action would be taken to provide around 40 additional beds and cots to the hospital, in view of the increasing number of in-patients.He said that the number of patients with complaints of contagious diseases has been increasing and people from Andhra Pradesh are also coming to the hospital for medical check-ups. Hence, additional facilities would be provided, the  minister added. He said that it was proposed to provide free medical services to children of below poverty line families, decision on which would be taken soon.VIMS director Dr Devanand, medical superintendent Dr Vidyadhar Kinnal were among those present.
