The attack on women in a pub in Mangalore has once again reared the ugly head of moral policing. It has also shown the dichotomy that a modern India is facing trying to balance its traditional forces.
Are self-appointed moral police a bigger threat to the society? Is Indian society ready for the modern Indian woman?
The IBNLive debate on the Mangalore incident has generated a number of reactions, both for and against the subject.
A reader called Solomon has made an interesting point. He says, “The so-called orthodox groups are comfortable only when women are attacked verbally and physically. Naturally they can’t digest it when the modern women performs at par with men”.
The sentiment lingers finds a better articulation in a post by another blogger who feels if these outfits could only redirect their rage towards terrorists, it would serve a greater purpose. He writes, “Why doesn’t their (Ram Sena, MNS and Shiv Sena ) blood boil when the country is attacked by foreigners? I think time has come now to send this so-called Sena to Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast and Bangladesh borders to fight with terrorists. The defence ministers need to arrest these people and then send them to border region to get a feel of what the real fight is”.
But what do women think of the issue? Gayatri feels it’s more of an anti-female mania than anything else. “It is not the question of whether the religious groups are comfortable with modern women or not , but the violence against girls and women being reported on a daily basis that raises a doubt that our great nation is suffering from an anti-female mania. This has got rooted so deep in our psyche. Indian females happen to suffer from unimaginable atrocities, regardless of their age and social position. It is the moral responsibility of every Indian to condemn such acts”.
But Karavadi Raghav feels discipline should come from within the society and women should also behave responsible. “Discipline should come from with in. Women should recognize the ground realities and behave accordingly. Government can not protect all people at all times. It will be better for women to learn martial arts for self protection. Clubs and pubs also should be controlled and it should not be construed as moral policing”.Morality vs culture: Join the debate
