HYDERABAD: A fortnight after a fire took seven lives and left hundreds of construction workers homeless at Gundla Pochampally in Medchal mandal of Rangareddy district, the victims continue to be destitute, though they are accommodated at construction site where they work. Apart from rehabilitation by revenue department, various organisations and individuals including the Indian Red Cross Society, Aswani Oils, Gayatri Parivar and a few nearby villagers had supplied blankets, mattresses, clothes and sheets for the victims who were put up in makeshift arrangement at the building where they worked. “They still continue to stay there. We are pressurising the builder to provide proper shelters for them,” said Abdul Hameed, tahsildar, Medchal.The revenue authorities confirmed on Wednesday, that the compensation amounts assured for the families of fire accident victims have been paid. “On behalf of the government, `1.5 lakh has been paid to each of the families of the deceased. On behalf of the builder, `3 lakh has been paid to families of two persons who were contracted labourers whereas `1.5 lakh was paid to the families of other five deceased by Jt Collector M Jagannadan in the presence of the builder on March 3” said Medchal tahsildar. He further added that the builder had also distributed `10,000 each to other families.
