BANGALORE: The Lokayukta Special Court granted conditional bail to MLA Y Sampangi on Monday. Sampangi was serving judicial custody for three days for allegedly violating bail conditions.Judge N K Sudheendra Rao completed the hearing of cross examination of two prime witnesses, including complainant Hussain Muyeen Farooq and Arun Kumar, and granted conditional bail to the MLA and posted the hearing to November 15.Conditions imposed on Sampangi include production of a personal bond of `1 lakh with two sureties. Sampangi has been barred from contacting any witnesses and shall not threaten the complainant or witnesses under any circumstances. Further, Sampangi is not allowed to go abroad without the court’s permission. The court asked him to surrender his passports within three days and threatened to cancel the bail if the conditions were violated. On Monday, the complainant Farooq was subjected to cross-examination by counsels of the accused. Earlier, public prosecutor Pramod Chandra posed a few questions to Farooq and the court recorded the statements. Meanwhile, Judge N K Sudhindra Rao said that the CD containing the recorded telephonic conversation between Sampangi and the complainant is an important evidence; he said he will verify it. Counsels for the accused, during the cross-examination, questioned Farooq on many issues, including the cheating cases lodged against him in the KGF police station. They also asked him to give details about the petty shop owned by Nayaz which was demolished, and H S Venkatesh, the KGF SP who had allegedly helped Farooq. Farooq was also asked to detail about SP Venkatesh’s transfer to the CID, and whether he had complained to Sampangi for transferring the SP to the CID. The advocates also said that the MLA had asked Farooq to give `5 lakh as compensation to the owner of the shop, which was demolished — which was refuted by the complainant. Farooq remained silent when the public prosecutor asked him about the telephone number used for conversing with the accused prior to the Lokayukta trap. When the judge posed the same question to him, Farooq told the court that he is under pressure and cannot answer all questions at this juncture. The judge turned angry when the complainant did not answer his questions properly. “MLA Sampangi was remanded in judicial custody for this very reason,” said the judge. “The court has made a free environment for hearing of the case. If the complainant answers like this, where is the meaning of hearing?”MLA sampangi’s petition AdmittedBangalore: The High Court on Monday admitted the writ petition filed by Kolar MLA Y Sampangi requesting the court to discharge him from the case, in which he is accused of accepting `5 lakh as bribe for discharging an accused from a case. Justice V Jagannatham adjourned the case to November 2 to enable the government to file its objections in the case. In his petition, he has contended that the house committee, which was constituted to probe the allegations against him, has exonerated him from all charges levelled against him.
