MHADA has announced 3,863 low-cost flats in prime areas.

New Delhi: Close on the heels of the allotment of DDA flats that's now snowballed into a controversy, there will be another rush for flats. This time in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) plans to put up 3,863 flats up for sale - at affordable rates. The flats are at prime locations such as Versova, Pratiksha Nagar, Ghatkopar, Chembur and Goregaon.

MHADA expects to earn Rs 5 crore from the sale of application forms alone, which start on Monday.

Twenty-two HDFC Bank branches have been roped in for the distribution of forms. Since the banks are expecting a huge crowd, the branches have already upped security for better coordination.

During the Malad-Malvani lottery for the economically weaker sections, over one lakh applicants turned up for the 800-odd flats on sale. The huge response led to a software crash on house allotment day. This time, MHADA says it is better prepared.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray wants the flats reserved for Maharashtrians. Writing in Sena mouthpiece Saamna, he has said the lottery system is not profitable for the Marathi Manus.
