CHENNAI: Kerala police arrested a seaman of commercial liner MV Prabhu Daya, which is suspected to have hit a fishing boat off the Alappuzha coast killing three fishermen recently. Mayur Virendra Kumar (25), who is the second mate of the ship, had been named as ‘Accused 2’ in the case, police sources said. The prime accused and first mate, Sugathan, jumped into the sea soon after the incident and is now hospitalised in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.K Padmakumar, IGP, Ernakulam Range, said Mayur had been booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and would be produced before the Alappuzha district magistrate’s court on Friday.On how the police team zeroed in on the seaman, he said, “We went through the ship’s roster to find out who was on duty and the records indicated that it was Mayur who was directing the ship at the time of the incident.” The senior police officer said the records and documents had been seized from the vessel. Bits of fishing nets and ropes found entangled in the propeller would be treated as evidence. There were no immediate plans to take the ship to Kerala.The Kerala police team later left for Alappuzha by road.
