MYSORE: Stating that committees headed by local MPs would be formed in all the districts to prevent irregularities in selecting beneficiaries to allot houses under various schemes, Housing Minister V Sommanna said that, the state government will submit Rs 16,000 crore project to the Centre to build 8 lakh houses in the state. The houses will be built under the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana.Disclosing that Karnataka is third in line to receive the schemes of the Centre, he appreciated the Centre for extending the yojana to all the city corporations of the state. He was speaking after dedicating 868 houses to slum dwellers in Hanchya Sathgalli, on the outskirts of the city under JNNURMBSUP Scheme on Friday. He said that the irregularities in selecting beneficiaries have become a cancerous disease and many mediators were misusing the housing schemes. The committees headed by local MPs would curb such trend, he hoped. The local MLAs, ZP and TP chief executive officers, chairman and commissioner of Karnataka Slum Development Board will be included in the committee, he added.Somanna disclosed the plans to bring a legislation to punish the vested interests who cheated the poor by promising the allotment of houses. He said he will visit the flood-hit areas in North Karnataka next week. The state aimed to complete the construction of the remaining 6,000 houses under the Aasare Scheme by the end of September, he added.Somanna dismissed the allegations of his involvement in illegal mining and alleged that the media is dragging his name unnecessarily and creating confusion among people.
