PARADIP: An 18-year-old participant in half-marathon died and five were injured here on Tuesday. The youth identified as Pravakar Behera was a quarter mile from the finishing line when he collapsed.According to the Paradip Port Sports Council (PPSC) sources, all the six runners were rushed to PPT Hospital where Behera was pronounced dead of apparent brain injury and bleeding. Other five runners are undergoing treatment in the hospital, fire officials said adding that extent of injury is not known.They were among the 500 people participating in the Paradip Half Marathon 2012, organised as part of the Golden Jubilee Port Foundation Day, on Tuesday. PPSC sources confirmed the death and said Behera belonged to Kendrapara.Many participants alleged that mismanagement and improper check-up besides no necessary information on health tips, of the runners led to the mishap.PPT Chairman G. Jagannath Rao regretted the unexpected turn of events and expressed his condolences. “An ex gratia of Rs 1.50 lakh will be handed over to the bereaved family,” Rao added. At least 500 participants, along with thousands of spectators turned up for the event. Chief Medical Officer of PPT hospital Nikhil Mohanty said the cause of death of the runner will be clear after autopsy. The five injured are doing well, he added.IIC of Paradip police station Anil Mishra said an unnatural death case has been registered.
