CHENNAI: Chennai city has the maximum number of BSNL broadband connections in the country, said A Subramanian, Chief General Manager of BSNL Chennai Telephones, at a press meet held on Wednesday. The city alone has over  3.45 lakh broadband connections, indicating that the city has significant Internet penetration when compared to most other metros. “As a result, while the number of landline connections in the country have been declining due to the increasing popularity of cell phones, the number of landline connections in the city have been stable,” said Subramanian. However, the growth in the number of BSNL cellphone connections has been slow and close to stagnation, according to officials, due to heavy competition and saturation in the market. “But close to 10 per cent of the users who moved away from BSNL are returning due to transparency in charges,” claimed Subramanian. He also announced that the training college of BSNL in Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai was introducing many innovative training programmes for the benefit of engineering students during the summer and semester holiday seasons. He also announced the introduction of several new schemes, targetting a larger customer base for the operator.“Considering the approaching festive season, BSNL is introducing a full talk value programme for existing prepaid card users,” he informed. “We are also introducing a Choose Your Number scheme through which existing users can choose any new number from a list of spare numbers that we will provide. They can also book the new number by sending an SMS to customer care,” he said. Talking about the Rural Area Internet Connectivity Programme, Subramanian said that 15 new Wimax-Bts systems would be installed to help provide unlimited broadband connectivity to many rural areas in Tamil Nadu. “Thirukazhikundram, Madhurandhagam, and Tacchur will be some of the key areas to benefit from this programme where they will be able to access unlimited Internet for just `750,” he said.
