Dehradun: Demanding immediate initiation of CBI probe into the death of Swami Nigamanand, a sadhu belonging to his Matri Sadan Ashram has started indefinite fast in Haridwar.
"More than two months have passed since Nigamanand had died, trying to stop quarrying in Ganga, but CBI inquiry has not been initiated," Swami Poornanand, whose fast entered second day on Sunday, alleged.
He said his fast would continue till his demand is met. Uttarakhand government has sent a letter on June 16 to the Centre recommending a CBI probe into Swami Nigamanand's death.
36-year-old Swami Nigamanand, who also belonged to Matri Sadan Ashram was fasting against illegal mining in the river Ganges. He died on June 13, triggering a political blame game with Congress alleging that he had died of poisoning and BJP accusing it of "playing politics" over his death.
Matri Sadan ashram head Swami Shivanand, however, had alleged that Swami Nigamanand was murdered as he was given "poison" during the treatment.
