The 40-year-old Sanchez-Vicario agreed a two-year deal.

Barcelona: Former women's No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has been appointed captain of Spain's Fed Cup team.

Sanchez-Vicario agreed a two-year deal. Her first match in charge is against Russia in the first round of the top-level World Group on February 4-5.

Sanchez-Vicario is a three-time French Open champion and US Open winner who guided Spain to all five of their Fed Cup triumphs, during the 1990s. The 40-year-old holds Spain records for overall wins (72), singles wins (50) and - partnering Conchita Martinez - doubles victories (18) from a Fed Cup career that spanned 16 years until 2002.

Sanchez-Vicario's appointment comes a day after the Spanish tennis federation named Alex Corretja as captain for the men's Davis Cup team.
