New Delhi: The main accused in the murder of Satyendra Dubey, an engineer of the National Highways Authority of India, escaped from a court on Friday.

Dubey was working on the Golden Quadrilateral Project in Gaya when he was murdered on 27 November 2003 allegedly for exposing corruption in the allotment of contracts for highway construction.

Dubey, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, had written an unsigned letter to the Prime Minister in which he mentioned corruption Golden Quadrilateral Project.

The CBI in 2004 arrested five persons in connection with the murder, which it said was done for a robbery. The five men tried to snatch Dubey’s suitcase and shot him when he tried to resist.

On September 19, 2005, one the accused, Mantu Kumar, escaped from a court in Patna. This led to allegations that the escape was orgainsed by the same people who had got Dubey killed.

Kumar was arrested from near his home in Panchayatee Akhada in Gaya a month later.

Dubey's murder led to nationwide outrage and the subsequent framing of a 'Whistleblower Act'.

Alumni associations of IITs set up the S K Dubey Foundation for Fight Against Corruption in India and IIT Kanpur instituted an annual award in his name, Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award, to be given to an alumnus for displaying highest professional integrity in upholding human values.
