SC extends interim order on continuing SIMI ban
SC has extended its its interim order till the second week of October.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court extended its interim order on continuing ban on SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India) till the second week of October.

The Centre's petition challenging the decision of a Special Tribunal to curbs imposed on the organisation came up for hearing on Thursday.

The apex court decided to extend the ban as the hearing on the petition remained inconclusive. The contention of the Centre is that the SIMI is involved in subversive and anti-national activities including Gujarat blasts.

Meanwhile, the Centre is also of the opinion that Special Tribunal failed to appreciate the cabinet note and intelligence reports before arriving at its decision to lift the ban.

However, this was opposed on the grounds that the tribunal's decision to lift the ban was not based on evidence and deposition of government witnesses.

In August 2008, a tribunal of the Delhi High Court lifted its two-year ban on SIMI as opposed to the Supreme Court which had once said that it is an organisation with a "secessionist movement."

However later, the Supreme Court suspended a tribunal’s order lifting the ban on the SIMI, declared a terror organisation by the government.
