New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to immediately constitute a committee, headed by former CBI director R K Raghvan, to recommend mode and means to curb incidents of ragging in educational institutions, which in recent times have claimed several lives.
A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat said the committee would focus on the evils of ragging, modalities to prevent it and stern action to be taken against those involved in it.
The committee would also suggest action that could be taken against the authorities of the educational institutions where incidents of ragging will be reported. The court asked the committee to submit its report within four months after the notification.
The court said it would be open to the committee to appoint persons from each state so that the ground reality on the ragging from that state could be brought to its notice.
The Centre said the present director of IIT Kanpur, Principle of Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and Principle of Ramjas College, University of Delhi, would be the other members of the committee headed by Raghvan.
The Bench said the committee would also nominate two suitable persons as members from Mumbai and Chennai.
The court also agreed to the suggestion that Sunil Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human resource Development, would be the member-convener of the committee. PTI
