Scholarship scam: 61 HMs suspended

For the first time in the history of elementary education, a record 61 headmasters (HMs) of Government-run schools were suspended en masse in Namakkal district on Friday following the unearthing of a scholarship scandal.

The head teachers of these institutions have been accused of either siphoning off or abetting or turning a blind eye to the swindling of scholarship funds to the tune of several lakh rupees meant for children of scavengers and tanners.

Already three headmasters were suspended in connection with the scandal a few days ago. Action is also pending against a HM who has moved to High School.

“District Elementary Education Officer T Arulmozhidevi issued the orders suspending the head teachers on Thursday night. The orders were served on Friday. She has also directed the correspondents of 11 Government-aided schools to suspend their HMs for involvement in the scandal,” an official source said.

An audit by officials of the Directorate of Elementary Education had revealed that scholarship funds were miused in 77 elementary and middle schools leading to an investigation. ENS
