THRISSUR: Kozhikode district may bag the gold cup kept at the treasury in Thrissur, as there is one more day left for the curtains to come down on the 52nd State School Youth Festival.Kozhikode kept the head start it got on the first day itself intact, with its presence felt in all events on all 16 stages, in performing arts, writing and oratorical competitions and musical items, scoring over 669 points in 176 items that were completed on Friday.Kozhikode, however, had a tough time living up to the expectation, with Thrissur,  Malappuram and Kannur tailgating with 645, 644 and 641 points respectively. As the contest for the cup gained a frenzied pitch, with teams and individuals filing appeals despite the judgment that seemed sane, the results had got confusing over the grading system and score sheet. However, the judges had no doubt that they had done a good job. “We had found the contestants very informed and promising. But, whether they would grow into the geniuses of tomorrow is something that is to be seen. The government should take the initiative to make art a mainstream occupation so that the winners of today become the course-charters of future,” Kureeppuzha Sreekumar, who was one of the panelists in the poetry competition, said. The performance venues were the most sought-after by the public, at the corporation stadium, Regional Theatre, Town Hall and Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School. Trophies for Kerala natanam, folk dance, kolkali, Arabanamuttu, ensemble, poorakkali, koodiyattam, kathakali and kathaprasangam which were the main events were shared equally by the northern and southern districts evenly.Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta led the South, with over 250 points in the High School and around 300 points in the HSS section. Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur and Thrissur got back with even more points.St Teresa’s AIHSS, Kannur with 65 points, BSSGHSS, Alathur (Palakkad) with 59 points and St Joseph’s Anglo-Indian Girls HSS,  (Kozhikode) with 46 points were the stars, while Carmel EM Girls HSS, Vazhuthacaud, with 45 points, Little Flower HS, Thrippilazhikom (Kollam) with 34 points   and SVG VHSS, Kidangannur (Pathanamthitta) with 30 points kept up the competition.
