THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents of Thekkummood Junction near Kunnukuzhy have been suffering for more than three months after the main sewerage pipeline burst during a JICA water supply pipeline work.Water from the burst sewerage pipe has been flowing into nearby homes which exist below the ground level.According to the residents, the situation arose when a 900-mm water supply pipeline was laid along the Pottakuzhi- Medical College stretch. Through the cracks formed on the retaining walls, the waste water started leaking and getting into the buildings nearby.Thekkumood Sumesh, member of Thekkumood Residents’ Association who lodged a complaint with the Water Resources Minister P J Joseph on Thursday, said that, “When the main line gets congested, the Water Authority sends personnel to simply clean up the manhole. They have done this 14 times.” But he says the pressure inside the sewerage line increases when it rains. This results in overflowing and waste water entering the nearby homes.The residents are in a dilemma as to what to do. Pradeep Lal S, a resident who runs a refreshment shop, says, “We had complained to the Mayor two months ago and she had said that the situation would be solved in six months, but nothing has been done as yet. The back portion of my home collapsed after it got soaked with sewage water. When rain sets in, the toilets gets filled with sewage and the residues.”Another double-storey building adjacent to his home is a women’s hostel. The hostel houses around ten women. On the ground floor, two women including the warden reside. Rejani S R, a hostel inmate says, “The toilets overflow, especially during rainy days.”The residents demand in unison that the sewerage line should be reinstalled.It is learnt that the managing director of Kerala Water Authority has been directed to take necessary action.
