THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Human Rights Commission chairperson Justice J B Koshy has observed that there is no necessity to have loudspeakers for religious services. In an order passed on a petition by K Somasundaram, the Commission noticed that loudspeakers are placed violating all reasonable norms at various religious places throughout the state whether it is temple, church or mosque. “There is no necessity to have loud speakers which creates sound pollution up to 2 km radius”. The SHRC chairman said in the order that those who want to attend the religious services would come to those places and there is no necessity to have loudspeakers. “Loudspeakers can be used, if necessary, only to make it audible for the people gathered inside the religious places and there is no necessity to disturb the people of other religion who are not at all interested in the religious services and discourse chantings of another religion,” said the order. The Commission also recommended against the use of loudspeakers near schools and colleges. Copies of the recommendations made by the SHRC would be given to the DGP, all district collectors, all district police chiefs and member-secretary of the Pollution Control Board to see that the directions of the Supreme Court are strictly implemented and actions taken against violations. “Action taken report should be filed by all concerned within three months from the date of receipt of a copy of this order failing which the Commission would be compelled to move the High Court or the Supreme Court as the case maybe,” said the order.
