Srinagar: A Special Investigation Team has been formed by the Jammu and Kashmir government to probe the circumstances which led to the escape of a Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba operative from a hospital here.
Naved Jhat alias Abu Hanzula escaped from SMHS hospital on Tuesday after two militants attacked and fired at policemen accompanying him there. Two policemen were killed in the attack.
J&K ADG Muneer Khan in a press conference said that after initial investigation, two militants and two over ground workers of the organisation were found have been involved in the attack and were arrested following raids in Kakpora of Pulwama district.
Police are still looking for two other militants suspected to have played a hand in the attack and are still at large.
Two pistols with several rounds of ammunition were recovered two of the suspects, Shakeel Ahmed Bhat and Tika Khan, respectively.
According to them, the conspiracy was hatched four months ago from inside the central jail. Tika Khan and another suspect Hilal Ahmed made several trips to the jail on different pretexts. The final planning of the operation, however, was done only a few weeks ago in one of the suspect’s home.
Meanwhile, ADG Muneer defended the lack of response from the police during the attack, saying, "We could have opened fire in the hospital but in the crossfire we could have killed civilians. We are not terrorists, we are professional.”
The incident took place at the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital in Kaka Sarai area of Srinagar on Tuesday morning. The terrorists fired at the police team accompanying Hanzula. Intelligence sources said Hanzula is a self-styled commander of Lashkar was caught in south Kashmir’s Kulgam in 2014.
