Raipur: Six suspected Maoist rebels were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.

The security forces also seized a huge cache of explosives. The task force is expecting more casualties during their month-long anti-Maoist operations.

"Till now we have recovered six bodies of the Maoists, however, the ground situation suggests that there must be more casualties on their side," Abhishek Pathak, Superintendent of Police of the Special Task Force, said.

Security personnel of Orissa have been informed about the encounter as some of the ultras managed to escape towards the border.

"Our forces are deployed on a search operation in the forests as well as the boarder area and other parts of the region. We have warned the Orissa police about it. And they are also starting search operation in their area," Pramod Kumar, a personnel of the anti-Maoist force, said.

The operation involved hundreds of central security personnel and state police forces. The Maoists have spread into the rural pockets of 20 states.

Maoist attacks have become more frequent this year, especially after the government launched 'Operation Green Hunt', a coordinated security offensive involving tens of thousands of police and paramilitary personnel to flush out the ultras from their jungle hideouts in central and eastern Indian states.

Over 1,000 Maoist attacks were witnessed in 2009 killing more than 600 people. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier termed the Maoists as India's gravest internal security threat.
