The Lok Sabha went on a three-day Holi recess but Speaker Somnath Chatterjee is no holiday mood.

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha went on a three-day Holi holiday and will meet again on Tuesday but Speaker Somnath Chatterjee is no mood to take holiday greetings.

The House was adjourned for the day after Samajwadi Party (SP) MPs disrupted proceedings while protesting against the Supreme Court permitting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s wealth.

Chatterjee announced the recess after adjourning the House twice. When members wished him “Holi mubarak” (Happy Holi), he said: "Yahan kaam hone se mubarak de sakte hain. ”(The greeting is worth it only if work is done here)

Samajwadi Party members came into the well of the House and shouted "Congress Bureau of Investigation murdabad" (Down with the Congress) and alleged that the Congress was misusing the CBI.

As their leader Sonia Gandhi watched on, many Congress members shouted back "Mulayam hatao, desh bachao" (Sack Mulayam, save India) and "Mulayam isteefa do" (Mulayam, resign).

Chatterjee, who has had a difficult Budget session since Monday, indicated that he didn’t like adjourning the House. "I am not a willing party" (to cancel the sitting for Monday), he was quoted by PTI as saying.

“I am expressing great agony. The House is not functioning day after day. People are criticising us. I again appeal to all sides to extend their cooperation," he said.

Rajya Sabha disrupted too

SP members in the Rajya Sabha created a din Rajya Sabha too, leading Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan to announce that the House would meet again on Tuesday.

The House was adjourned twice before lunch after SP members shouted slogans against the Government and alleged a witch-hunt against Mulayam.

At the start of proceedings, SP members led by Amar Singh trooped into the well, shouting slogans alleging that the Government was misusing the CBI for settling political scores.

A PTI report said Singh was seen displaying a CD as his party colleagues shouted slogans against the CBI and accused the Congres-led UPA government of conspiring against SP. The CD allegedly contains conversation between a TV reporter and the person who filed a PIL against Yadav.
