CHENNAI: Special pujas were performed for over 100 aged cows that are sheltered at the Sri Go Samrakshana Sala on Kasi Viswanathar Street in West Mambalam here on Monday. The shelter for cows, being run by the Kanchi Mutt was the centre of attraction on Mattu Pongal, which is traditionally observed as an occasion of thanksgiving to cattle, especially cows and bulls. Speaking to City Express, Vinayagar Murali, Secretary of the Go Samrakshana Sala, said that devotees performed special pujas and arati for the cows, after which they were fed sumptuously.  Similar pujas were also held at Gosalas, that is run by the mutt at Cheyyar, Iyengar Kulam and Kelambakkam, he added. Lectures on cow worship and protecting them, which is an integral aspect of the Hindu religion, were delivered by Swami Brahma Yogananda, Murugasramam Swamigal besides RBVS Manian, he said. Recalling that Mahatma Gandhi loved cows, Murali said that the Father of the Nation held meetings on cow protection ahead of every annual Congress conclave. “Cows and cattle should be loved. It is our duty to protect the cow progeny.” Stating that Panchakavyam, is a panacea for all ills, he said it was being distributed free every Sunday at 8.30am. For details, call 24700336.
