KOLLAM: Braving the rains, the Sree Ganesh Chundan, powered by the rowers of St Francis Boat Club, Kollam, lifted the coveted trophy of the President’s Trophy Boat Race (PTBR) held at Ashtamudi Lake here on Tuesday. President Pratibha Patil presented the trophy, instituted by the President, to the captain of the St Francis Club, K Arun Kumar. In a photo finish final, Sree Ganesh whizzed past Nehru Trophy winners Devas rowed by Jesus Boat Club who were pushed to second place. Anari Chundan, rowed by Thiruvarpu Boat Club, Kottayam, finished the second runner-up. The lone representative from Alappuzha in the finals, Payippadan chundan, rowed by Town Boat Club, Alappuzha, finished fourth in the finals.The final round of competition was delayed following a heavy downpour, immediately after the heats and inaugural function. Tens of thousands of people turned out at the riverfront to witness the event, which was held under tight security regulations owing to the presence of the President. In the Thekkaodi women’s category, Devas emerged winners.
