Rameswaram: The Vivekanandha Kendra at Kanyakumari is joining hands with Rameswaram Municipality and Ramanathapuram district administration to make this holy island a "Green island", according to Saraswathi Coordinator for the programme.
She said that two seperate buckets would be given to the house hold to collect plastic waste and bio-waste seperately and dispose the garbage without affecting the environment and eco-system of the island.
She said that there were 66 holy water sites in the form of well, tanks and ponds in and around the island and of them 22 were located inside the temple. Some of the holy water sites had been encroached by the people.
Steps would be taken to remove the encroachment desilt the holy water sites and fill them with water in a phased manner. In the first phase Ramar Theertham would be taken up for desilting.
