HYDERABAD: A lesson in combining aesthetics with technology for creating the perfect hot wheels is something that all students look forward to. And if it is by automotive designer Dilip Chhabria, nothing could be better and that was what students at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad got on Wednesday. It was a treat for the students as they learnt the finer aspects of the art from the designer who is known for catering to the market of customized vehicles in the country.Attended by the students across departments, the talk traced the journey of a nascent designer automobile market in the country to the present demand for high-end luxury cars customized for the consumer. “It is more art than engineering. A course in design is required to add that creative edge to designs,” observed a student of mechanical engineering who is a member of the science club ‘Torque’ which organized the event. The students were also inspired by the business model of the designer’s brain-child ‘Dilip Chhabria Designs (DCD)’ which forayed into the customized automobile market when very few players existed in the field. In 15 years of its existence, the company has to its credit designs for vanity vans of Bollywood stars such as Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Dutt. “Designing is an emerging field and innovation in the field can give serious competition to the Italian designers who are supposed to be the best,” opines a student of IIT-H who plans to take up designing in future.
