PALAKKAD: Some fundamentalist organisations are indulging in child trafficking from northern states to Kerala, it is learnt. Sources in the Railway Police said that over 100 children, below the age of 10, were reportedly brought in the PatnaKochi Express to Palakkad on Sunday. The train reached the station at 1.30 a.m.
Sources said while the people at the station tried to question the children, the elders who accompanied them, wearing a religious attire, prevented the children from speaking to the public. There were many girls in the group. Railway Police sources said choosing midnight to bring in the children itself aroused suspicion. Eyewitnesses said the children were herded into waiting vehicles outside the station. Some people said the children were taken to orphanages. However, the police at the Palakkad Junction railway station did not intervene or inquire as to where so many children were being taken to. "The intention of the organisation which brought the children to the state has to be investigated. Only a fullfledged probe will bring out the truth and whether there was any racket involved, police said.
