Demanding uniform fee reimbursement for every poor student irrespective of their caste, creed and religion, Telugu Desam MLAs staged a protest at the entrance to C-Block (Chief Minister’s Office) in the Secretariat here on Thursday.
Ten TDP legislators _ G Muddukrishnama Naidu, B Goplakrishna Reddy, Devineni Uma, Manda Venkateswarlu, B Mastan Rao, Mahindar Reddy, Linga Reddy, Jaipal Yadhav, Prakash Gou and B Durga Prasad _ participated in the demonstration. After sloganeering for some time, they went to the C-Block for submitting a memorandum to the chief secretary. But, in a change of mind at the last minute, they staged a sit-in at the entrance demanding that the chief secretary or members of the cabinet sub-committee on fee reimbursement come down to them. They staged the protest for about half an hour before police whisked them away. They were released later.
Earlier in the day, speaking to mediapersons, Muddukirshnama Naidu criticised the government for capping the reimbursement of fees for BCs and EBCs. ‘’What we want is simple: no injustice to poor students. Be it Rs 50,000 or Rs 1 lakh or above, the entire fee for all professional courses has to be reimbursed by the government as it is a matter concerning the future of 26.50 lakh students.’’
Claiming that it was Chandrababu Naidu who had introduced the fee reimbursement for SCs and STs in 2000, the TDP leader said that if the government did not come out with a revised and clear-cut policy on the matter in a couple of days, they would intensify the agitation.
Student unions also organised demonstrations at various places in the city and the state, demanding full fee reimbursement for student.
