New Delhi: The UPA Government says that Anna Hazare and his supporters have been detained because they were adamant on going ahead with their fast. Union Home Secretary RK Singh said that Anna Hazare and his supporters have defied state orders and hence taken into preventive custody.
Sources told CNN-IBN that the Government is not against Hazare and agree with him that a strong Lokpal Bill is needed to tackle corruption but Parliament was supreme. Adding that law will take its on course they added that the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs will meet at 10 AM.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the Delhi Police on detention of Hazare and his supporters.
The 73-year-old Gandhian was detained by the Delhi Police at his residence in Mayur Vihar ahead of his proposed fast against corruption on Tuesday. Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia were also taken into preventive custody by the police.
"The police spoke to him. He stated that he intends to defy the prohibitory orders, so he has been detained," said Singh.
Hazare and his supporters were taken into custody before he was to proceed to the venue of his fast in JP Park where prohibitory orders are in place.
Around 500 supporters were with Hazare at the time of his detention. He has been taken to the General Officers Mess in Civil Lines area of New Delhi.
