BANGALORE: The Cubbon Park police have arrested a hi-tech fraudster who allegedly purchased air tickets from reputed air travel companies by using fake credit cards. His bank accounts with deposits of `23 lakh has been frozen by the police.They have also recovered cash to the tune of `2.81 lakh from the accused.Sathyaprakash Samal (25), a native of Orissa, is the person who has been arrested.Samal has studied up to second PUC.According to the police, Samal was well versed in cyber crimes and used to purchase air tickets from reputed travel agencies using fake credit cards and later sold them at lower prices. He had allegedly cheated Thomas Cook travel agency `27 lakh by booking air tickets through its website, using fake credit cards.“The system was that if anybody purchases air tickets through the company’s website, the money would be credited to the company’s account in HDFC bank. On August 12, 2010, the executives of the company had gone to the bank to check the online transactions between May 14, 2010 and August 8, 2010. It was found that air tickets were purchased by using various fake credit cards. Later the company had filed a case in this regard,” the police said.Based on the complaint, the police identified the IP address from which the online transactions were made and the address was traced to Samal. “In a similar case in 2006, the Airport police had arrested him and the case was handed over to Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The cyber crime sleuths of the CID investigated the case and filed a chargesheet against Samal in a court. However, he continued the cyber crimes after he came out of the jail,” the police added.The police have recovered Samal’s mobile phones, computers, laptops and other computer accessories that he used in the crime.
