THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ‘torchbearers’ of morality can now rue over their foiled attempt at re-enacting part-2 of ‘Thasni Banu’ incident in the city.If the self-proclaimed morality preachers dared slap their victim in Kochi while imparting their lecture and if it took some days before they were arrested, their followers in the city were in for a sharper and quicker rebound on Wednesday. All credit goes to Vijesh Vijay, the IT professional who had been wise enough to act in the most unpleasant of circumstances.Though taken aback initially by the ugly-tongued queries and stinking abuses, he made sure that his wife and his mother-in-law were safe. He showed sense not to be aggressive with the hooligans and, most importantly, he picked up the nerve to have them arrested right away.“They introduced themselves as policemen and started questioning me. One of them grabbed my collar and started talking in a crass manner. I grew suspicious and tried calling the police. They would not let me talk to the police, but still I put the call on hold,’’ Vijesh told City Express over phone. It was on Wednesday night that the IT professional and his family were subjected to such moral policing by a group of men at Kowdiar. They had come to a relative’s house at Kowdiar when they were confronted by the goons."The whole episode lasted for over an hour. They asked for our relative’s home and demanded our marriage certificate. They even feigned ringing up the police control room. Slowly, they started passing snide comments. One of them tried pulling off my wedding ring and said they would leave, if they got what they wanted. But I was determined not to give up. Meanwhile, I distracted their attention along my relative while my wife and her mother sneaked off to our relative’s home. It was my wife who had then called the police,’’ Vijay said."By that time, I had drawn them closer towards the residential area. When the lights were turned on, they were frightened. The police also reached on time and they were caught.’’The techie, who has been in the city for the past six years, has come out of the shocking incident pretty well. He turned up for his job as usual on Thursday and feels that it is very important to leave such unpleasant incidents behind you."It is uncomfortable to face such situations with your family. But I trusted the police and took the course of law.’’Vijay was also all praise for the police. "They were so serious about it. They took care of us and were uncompromising with the culprits, which made us feel really good after a harrowing night. We would have felt so bad if the police had not caught them the same night,’’ he said.
