In a horrifying incident that shook residents in Vyasarpadi, a 13-year-old boy who was playing cricket on a partially flooded college ground, was electrocuted on Saturday.
According to the police, Samuel, a class VI student of a corporation school had gone out with his friends in the afternoon to play cricket at the Ambedkar Arts College ground.
A little after 2 pm, Samuel went to retrieve the ball which had landed in a puddle of water. Soon after he waded into water, he screamed in pain, an eyewitnesses said.
When his friends and a few older boys playing in the vicinity rushed over, they were shocked to find his body motionless.
Police officials said that some boys then noticed that a wire from the overhead light had come loose and was in contact with the water. The group called an ambulance and the police but it was too late for Samuel to survive.
The live wire was retrieved and defused by the ground staff.
On information, Samuel’s parents, Vijayakumar and Suguna rushed to the spot and were distraught at seeing their son’s body. The body was sent to Stanley Medical College for post-mortem and a case registered by the MKB Nagar police.
There has been an increase in complaints of live wires coming in contact with flooded water after heavy rains.
While (TNEB) officials were unavailable for comment, a source with the electricity utility said that no other untoward incident had been reported and they were on full alert.
