CUTTACK: If the violence at Balikuda in the morning was not enough, tension prevailed in the heart of the City in the evening with youths of two localities under Purighat Police limits clashing with each other. The situation, however, was controlled due to quick intervention of police. The simmering tension over determination of locality limits between Pithapur Nuasahi and Jhola Sahi aggravated into violence when a group belonging to the former allegedly trespassed on the jurisdictional area of the latter to park the automobile chassis used to take the idols for immersion. The youths from Pithapur Nuasahi were confronted by a group from Jhola Sahi and a clash broke out. The whole area was soon littered with stones and bricks hurled by the rivals on each other. As police rushed to the spot, the groups retreated into their own areas. Armed police have been deployed in the region to prevent further flare-up. Police said the Pithapur Nuasahi area was new to Durga Puja and did not have any demarcated jurisdictional area as a locality. It was sandwiched between Pithapur and Jhola Sahi, whose residents did not want any ingression into their areas. The Nuasahi has been conducting Puja for the last couple of years and installing ‘Hara Parbati’ idols on a makeshift ‘mandap’ over a drain. This year they had demanded demarcation of their locality which had been opposed by the rival group. A meeting was convened by the Cuttack Nagar Puja Committee and the Cuttack Nagar Shanti Committee where it was decided to observe status quo till the pujas were over and take a decision on the issue in December.
