HYDERABAD/VISAKHAPATNAM: An impending threat of torrential rains and high speed winds looms large over Coastal Andhra Pradesh as Tuesday's storm Thane has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.
Officials have upped their efforts to ensure that all fishermen at sea return home safe and are taking necessary measures for disaster management.The body of one of the two fishermen who drowned after their boat capsized on Tuesday night was swept ashore near Gollapalem in Malkirpuram of East Godavari district, while the body of another fisherman is yet to be traced.
The victims were identified as M Narasimha Murthy and P Venkateswarlu from Etimoga village near Kakinada. Five others who went fishing along with the victims managed to swim back to the shore.According to the Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam, the system which is currently stationary, will make the landfall between Cuddalore and Sriharikota on December 30. Squally winds with speeds of 45 kmph to 55 kmph are likely along the South Andhra coast from Thursday. The wind speed is likely to escalate to 125 kmph. Sea conditions will range from rough to very rough along and off the South Andhra coast with tidal waves rising high.According to officials, almost all the fishermen who had ventured into the sea have reached the shore safely, while some of them were on their way back. Second danger signal has been hoisted at all ports. The sea is reportedly ferocious in Govindapallepalem, Srinivasapatnam and Vavila Daruvu in Kota mandal, Chennarayunipalle and Tummalapenta in Kavali Rural mandal, and Krishnapatnam in Mutukur mandal in Nellore district.
