Thanjavur tops in MNREGS

THANJAVUR: Thanjavur leads in MNREGS spending, said Collector K Baskaran on Wednesday.For the fiscal year 2011-12, the government had allocated `107 crore to be spent on irrigation renovation projects and silting works of various water bodies in the district. Over `103 crore has been spent till the first week of March as salary for 60,000 villagers working under the scheme. Very soon the district will reach the current year’s spending limit, he said. The Collector inspected houses constructed under the green housing project and Indira Awas Yojana in Thanjavur. Around 2,259 green houses are under construction of which 45 are about to be completed. Each unit costs around `1.8 lakh.
