THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Justice E Mytheen Kunju Commission, which probed into the Thekkady boat tragedy on September 30, 2009, resulting in the loss of 45 lives, has indicted many persons including the boatdriver in the list of guilty and recommended awarding apt punishment in accordance with law.The commission’sreport will be submitted to the government on ThursdayThe commission has also made around 23 recommendations to prevent the recurrence of boat tragedies in the state, it is reliably learnt.The commission arrived at the conclusion that several persons, both jointly and individually, were responsible for the tragedy, according to top sources.The Thekkady tragedy occurred when the boat Jalakanyaka’ which was on a cruise, overturned 2 km away from the boat landing point.The vessel sank after the boat driver reportedly took a sharp turn in the waters to facilitate the tourists view wild animals on the shores from a close rangeMost of the victims were from outside the state.Among the victims were those from New Delhi, Kolkata and other metros as well as a couple of Keralites settled in Tamil Nadu.Around 45 persons had a miraculous escape, though many of them lost their close relatives in the tragedy.The commission had held about 35 sittings, including many at Thekkady and Ernakulam.The voluminous report of 232pages had been prepared after collecting evidence from scores of people including survivors of the tragedy and technical expertsMany of the recommendations are connected with the Kerala Vessel Rules, 2010, prepared in the aftermath of the Thekkady tragedy. The Mytheen Kunju commission is the third judicial commission to be appointed to probe the Thekkady boat tragedy.
