CHENNAI: If you are a college student or a working professional in any stream, here is an opportunity to understand the challenges in ensuring the rights of a child in an Indian context. Child Rights and You (CRY), an NGO working for children’s rights, has announced its summer internship. This internship is part of the CRY Volunteer Action Programme. Currently, internships are available in Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi for a minimum of six weeks.CRY internship programmes are designed to allow interns to deepen and put into practice their theoretical knowledge of development issues, and to provide them with a platform to develop a more grounded understanding of child rights challenges in an Indian context.Diya Deb, manager, CRY Volunteer Action Programme, Chennai, said, “Actually this is a great opportunity for students and others from diverse backgrounds to use their skills and learn more about child rights and in turn contribute to the field of child rights.”Aditi Ravishankar, a student from a city college who was an intern with CRY last year, shared her experience. “It was a great feeling to be a part of the exercise. It was a real exposure for people like us to different components of the education department and how they work, and also to dealing with bureaucrats.”She added, “I really gained an understanding of how to get an appointment with a bureaucrat to talk about advocacy of child rights. To get to the point of actually meeting them as students, we need to keep our patience and have the courage to present our position.”The internship module includes exposure to advocacy, research, campaigning and networking skills, systematic field work, fact finding, report writing, documentation and initiating various advocacy processes. Those interested can send an email to [email protected] with a brief note. CRY will email back a soft copy of the application form and the shortlisted candidates will have a telephonic interview. The last date for sending in the filled in application is May 20.
