NEYYATINKARA: A 19-year-old youth, who put the lives of a bunch of school students in danger by driving a school van under the influence of liquor, was arrested by the police. The youth has been identified as Akhil Kumar, son of Surendran Nair of Thannikkavila near here. The lives of the students were saved following the timely intervention of local people, who noticed the vehicle being driven in a zig-zag manner. The police said that Akhil Kumar was the cleaner of the van which conducted a parallel service in Neyyatinkara region. There were over 15 students of a private school at Amaravila in the vehicle, which was used to drop the students home after school hours. The vehicle, losing its control, nearly rammed into other vehicles, when it was spotted by the local people. They informed the police, who acted immediately and stopped the vehicle. A medical test conducted following the arrest confirmed that Akhil had consumed alcohol. Even though Akhil Kumar claimed that he possessed a driving licence, the police are yet to verify it. He is currently in police custody.
