TIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Police have seized Rs 40.52 lakh and gold ornaments weighing 22 kg from a car in the city where a bypoll is scheduled on October 13.Two persons have been taken into custody last night and the money and gold ornaments seized from them at Karumandapam, handed over to the Treasury, police said today.It took one hour for the police team and treasury officials to verify the jewels and count the cash, officials said.A key contest is awaited in Tiruchirappalli (West) where ruling AIADMK's M Paranjothi is pitted against the DMK's K N Nehru, now in jail on charges of land grabbing.The Election Commission had received several complaints of voters being bribed in the run up to the April 13 Assembly polls and over Rs 40 crore of unaccounted cash had been seized from various places in the state, at that time.
