It's a proud day for the Valley. Two candidates from Kashmir got top ranks in the civil services exams, one of them getting the second rank, when results were declared on Tuesday.
For 23-year-old Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan, a railway officer, got the second rank in his second shot at the exams.
An engineer from IIT Roorkee, Athar got the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) in his first attempt in 2014 and is currently undergoing training at Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management, Lucknow.
It is a dream come true," an elated Athar said, adding, "I will not leave any stone unturned to work for the betterment of people".
He said, "I have opted for Jammu and Kashmir cadre also. I will be happy in case I get chance to work there. I think there is a lot of scope to fulfil aspirations of people of my state."
Another resident of Srinagar, Sheema Qasba's hard work also paid off. She secured the 209th rank in the civil services exams held in 2015. Sheema Qasba is the daughter of government officer GN Qasba from Srinagar. Her father is credited with doing exemplary work during the Kashmir floods of 2014.
Her mother is a homemaker and she lives in Naseem Bagh area of Srinagar. She did her graduation from Jodhpur University and her schooling from Srinagar. She has been living in Delhi for the last three years, working with a private law firm.
About two years ago, she decided to give a shot at the civil services and gave up her full-time to focus on the preparations. Her hard work and sacrifice finally paid off.
A total of seven candidates from the Valley - ten in all from the state - cleared the UPSC exams this time, the others apart from Athar and Sheema securing lower ranks.
