The police arrested two Maoists on Friday from separate places in the insurgency-hit Bastar region of Chhattisgarh state.

Jan militia cadre Sukhchand Kashyap (21) was arrested from Mardoom police station limits of Kondagaon district, Kondagaon Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Atri told PTI.

A local police team combing the Mardoom region, located around 300 km away from the Chhattisgarh state capital, arrested Sukhchand from Kaknar village.

During interrogation, the arrested Maoist revealed that he was in close touch with senior ranking Maoist cadres. Besides, he was allegedly involved in several incidents of crime, including murder, attacks on police party and others, the ASP said, adding, he carried a reward worth Rs 5,000 on his head.

In another incident, Sukhman Gavde (24), who was wanted in several Maoist incidents since 2010, was rounded up by a joint team of Border Security Force (BSF) and the district police force from Tadoki police station limits of Kanker district, a police official said.

Search operations have been intensified in insurgency hit pockets of the state, particularly in Bastar as the Maoists observe Martyrs' Week from July 28 to August 3. Over 20 insurgents have been arrested so far from different areas of Bastar.
