HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation launched the two-bin system of garbage collection in selected colonies on Monday. The system will help segregate wet and dry garbage in households.Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu formally launched the programme in Nagarjuna Nagar Colony, Tarnaka, LIC Colony, near Indira Park and Navodaya Colony in Mehdipatnam. The two-bin system will be implemented in about 26 colonies on a pilot basis. Bio-degradable waste like vegetable/garden/food/coconut waste can be placed in the green bin and non-bio degradables like plastic covers, broken glasses, wood and iron wastage in the red bin. The wastage in the green bin will be placed at vacant lands for compost making and the wastage in red bins transported to dumping yards. The civic body decided to implement the system after some GHMC officials saw the segregation system in Vellore, where women members of self-help groups are segregating 132 recyclable items from garbage and composting the waste. GHMC will distribute publicity material to educate women and children and requested colony welfare associations’ to help in making the project a success.
