Japan's Masato Uchishiba retained the men's -66kg judo Olympic gold medal at the Beijing Games here on Sunday.
Uchishiba, the champion in Athens four years ago, was making his comeback to the Japanese team having missed out on last year's World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
He beat Benjamin Darbelet in the final after the Frenchman submitted while being pinned, having hurt his neck in the action that brought the two fighters to the ground.
Cuba's Yordanis Arencibia and Pak Chol Min of North Korea took the bronze medals, beating Russian Alim Gadanov and Mirali Sharipov of Uzbekistan respectively.
