Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna has returned the state government's ordinance stalling the controversial Ulhasnagar demolitions.

Krishna said that the ordinance amounts to contempt of court as the matter was still sub-judice.

Krishna said that passing the ordinance would mean disrespecting the court and the state should either file an affidavit in the court or be party to court’s decision.

The State had hoped to get it promulgated before the matter is next heard before the Bombay High Court on January 11. The court now ask the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation to submit an updated report on the state of demolitions in the area.

Following the development, Chief Minister has called for a high level meeting of the top urban development officials on Tuesday.

In an April 27 order, the Bombay High Court had ordered the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation to demolish 855 illegal buildings.

But soon after the demolitions began, political parties banded together and the Cabinet pushed through an ordinance to save from demolition illegal structures and encroachments that have come up till January 1, 2005.
