Amid an uneasy-calm in trouble-hit Neikarapatti village, officials and several groups began peace initiatives on Friday.
Collector K Maharabushanam and West Zone IG Sundaramoorthy visited the village and held talks with the residents.
At the peace meeting, which was attended by police, revenue officials and MLA S K Selvam, convened by Salem RDO Prasanna Ramasamy on Friday, villagers demanded unconditional release of all those arrested on Thursday. From the officials side it was stressed that all props put up for the Erudhu Aattam sport be removed and strict compliance with Supreme Court guidelines.
No major breakthrough was achieved in the talks as the officials did not give any commitment to release the arrested persons. Among the 130 taken into custody on Thursday, 79 were arrested under cases of Unlawful Assembly, Damage of Public Property and Causing public inconvenience by blocking highway. Seven policemen and nearly 10 villagers were hurt in the clash.
While villagers argued that only jallikattu was banned and not Erudhu Aattam; officials said permission was needed to hold the event as per SC norms.
